Mario Luigi Cardinal Ciappi, O.P.

Cardinal Ciappi was born on October 6, 1909 in Florence, Italy. He was ordained to the Priesthood on Holy Saturday in 1932 by His Eminence Cardinal F. Marchetti Selvaggiani, Vicar of Pope Pius XI. Following his ordination, Cardinal Ciappi continued his studies in Sacred Theology at the Angelicum where he received his doctorate in 1933. He continued his studies with complimentary courses in the Universities of Fribourg, Switzerland and the University of Louvain.

Upon completion of his studies, he began to teach moral and dogmatic theology at his alma mater, the Angelicum, until 1955. He also lectured on Tomistic aesthetics at the Institute "Beato Angelico" in Rome.

In May of 1955, Pope Pius XII named him Master of the Sacred Palace. As Master of the Sacred Palace, Cardianl Ciappi served five Popes - Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II.

He was raised to the dignity of Cardinal on June 27, 1977 and was ordained a Bishop a few days prior to his installation.

Cardinal Ciappi was a personal friend of my family for many years, and if there is any person I know on this earth who is a saint, it was him. Cardinal Ciappi entered eternal life April 22, 1996!
